Power Generation

Almost all of New Jersey's electricity is generated using natural gas or nuclear power. Nearly 45% of the electricity is generated at two nuclear power plants, Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station and Salem Nuclear Power Plant. Both nuclear power plants are operated by PSEG Nuclear. By 2035, the state plans to transition completely to renewable energy sources for electricity generation.

Transmission Grid

The state of New Jersey is part of the Eastern Interconnection, the second largest electricity transmission grid. The transmission grid is operated by PJM, a regional transmission organization. Increased electricity consumption and the construction of new data centers require the upgrading and replacement of old transmission lines. A significant portion of the transmission grid is maintained and operated by Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) and Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G).

Renewable Sources

Until recently, less than 10% of New Jersey's electricity was generated from renewable energy sources. In 2018, a decision was made to transition completely to renewable energy sources by 2035. Most of New Jersey's green electricity comes from small-scale and large-scale solar photovoltaics (PV). Small solar power plants already add more than 3 GWh to the state's electricity transmission grid.

Electricity Rates

Since 1999, New Jersey has been a deregulated state. Part of the electricity bill pays for the delivery of electricity to service utilities (PSE&G, JCP&L). The other part is paid to the electricity supplier. Consumers can choose their electricity supplier and optimize their electricity costs. The average cost of electricity in New Jersey is higher than the national average and is about 21.2 ยข/kWh for state residents.

All electricity originates from power plants. In New Jersey, almost all electricity is generated by gas or nuclear power plants. Two nuclear power plants in New Jersey are operated and maintained by PSEG Nuclear. The largest gas-fired power plants are Linden Generating Station in Linden and Bergen Generating Station in Ridgefield. Essex County Resource Recovery Facility generates electricity from biomass. The power plant is located in Newark and has a capacity of 60 MWh.

Four large electric utilities serve most of the population of New Jersey. Orange & Rockland (O&R) serves the northern part of the state, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) serves the central part of the state, and Atlantic City Electric serves the southern part of New Jersey. The largest electric company, Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G), serves more than 70% of New Jersey's population. New Jersey residents have the option to purchase electricity from competing suppliers, including NRG, Direct Energy, and Constellation.

Solar energy is developing rapidly in New Jersey. Ten years ago, the percentage of green electricity was negligible. Now, dozens of photovoltaic installations have been set up in the state, generating more than 6 GWh of electricity. The most powerful of these are Ben Moreell Solar Farm, Toms River Merchant Solar, Toms River Merchant Solar, Mount Olive, and Six Flags Solar. New Jersey has a New Jersey Clean Energy Program. Participants in the program significantly reduce their electricity bills. Small-scale solar, such as customer-owned PV panels, make a significant contribution to the state's electricity generation.
