Power Generation

Electricity generation is an important part of Maine's economy. The largest electricity producer is Central Maine Power. In addition to Central Maine Power, electricity is generated by 125 power generation companies, including Longroad Energy, Brookfield Renewable, and Calpine. About one-third of the electricity is still generated by gas-fired power plants. About 14% of electricity is generated using biomass. The last nuclear power plant was closed in 2005.

Transmission Grid

The state of Maine is part of the Eastern Interconnection, the second largest electricity transmission grid. Although the Western Interconnection, Eastern Interconnection, and Texas Interconnection are connected to each other, there is almost no exchange of electricity between them. Most of Maine is operated by the Independent System Operator of New England (ISO-NE). ISO-NE is a nonprofit organization, that is responsible for making sure the electricity being produced around the region. Parts of northern Maine re operated by the Northern Maine System Operator.

Renewable Sources

The state of Maine is one of the most progressive in terms of generating electricity from renewable sources. 67% of all electricity is generated by hydroelectric dams, solar power plants, wind turbines, or biomass. Hydroelectric power plants make the largest contribution, generating 44% of all electricity. Biomass-fueled power plants are of great importance. The largest of these are Somerset Waste Plant, Rumford Cogeneration Plant, and Androscoggin Mill. Wind energy is actively used in Maine. Wind energy generated 27% of Maine's renewable electricity generation.

Electricity Rates

The cost of electricity in Maine remains one of the highest in the country. Although Maine is a deregulated state, there are restrictions on the choice of energy company. There is competition between electricity supply companies, and consumers can choose or change their electricity supplier. Electricity transmission and distribution remain regulated. Wires, poles, and equipment maintenance are owned by companies such as Versant Power and Central Maine Power. Consumers cannot change their utility company. The average price for electricity in Maine is about 28¢/kWh for residents and about 19¢/kWh for businesses.

There are about 125 power companies operating in Maine that generate electricity. Most companies use hydroelectric dams, wind turbines, and gas-fired power plants. This includes Calpine, Brookfield Renewables, Central Maine Power, and Longroad Energy. Energy suppliers are poorly regulated. They can choose their customers and sell either to wholesale buyers or directly to consumers.

In Maine, the electricity transmission grid is operated by the non-profit organization Independent System Operator New England (ISO-NE). Part of the transmission grid in the north of the state is operated by Northern Maine System Operator. Private electric companies and local utilities, including Versant and Central Maine Power, repair power lines, transformers, local poles, and substations. They are responsible for the continuous delivery of electricity to consumers.

The state of Maine is one of the most advanced in the use of renewable energy sources. Most of its electricity is generated by hydroelectric dams, wind farms, and solar farms. There are 478 public electric vehicle charging locations in the state. Maine ranks third in New England in this regard. Although solar energy does not contribute as much, the use of solar farms and solar panels has been growing rapidly in recent years. Many electric companies in Maine, such as Kennebunk Light & Power District, ReVision Energy, and Gowen Power Systems, offer the installation of solar panels and other solar energy facilities.
